Speak Monkey Speak!

Psalm 34:13  Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.

Well, there ya go meddling again David! I mean just when things were looking up you had to go and say that. What were you thinking? Couldn’t you have said, “read your bible more”? Or, how about, “Pray more”? Or, “share your faith more”? But no, you had to say, “Watch your mouth!”

Do you know how hard that is? I mean my mouth wants to rattle man. It wants to speak the truth in love. It wants to encourage that fallen and wayward brother. It wants to ask for more prayer for that low down no good dirty sinner and his pathetic wife. Don’t ya know?

Is that how your tongue wags? Mine goes there. It is a battle of the blabber.

That tiny organ of yours that looks like a piece of calf’s liver, is a malicious monster. It flaps uncontrollably and doesn’t like to be told what to do. It seems to have a mind of its own. And that mind is yours. It spares no horses in stating its own opinion.

Did you know that tongues have opinions? No? They do. And you know what they say about opinions, right? Oh no? Well, the old saying goes something like this, “Opinions are like armpits. Everybody has at least two. And for the most part they all STINK!” OH my. Well, thanks for sharing that Mike!

David, in this verse is stating one principle twice. Did you notice? Tongue and lips are the same thing. They represent the mouth or our conversation. You will find it difficult to speak with just one or the other. Either the three work in conjunction or words don’t come out. I see you trying just now! I did the same thing.

Anyway, David says that we are to keep our mouth from evil and lies. Do you think that you can do that? James says its easier to tame a wild animal than it is to tame the tongue. I want to give it a try. I know that it is January 20 and usually all of our New Years resolutions are broken by now. But what say we try this one on for size? David says that it is one of the first steps in the fear of the LORD. Wanna have a go? Me too! One, two, three, four, SPEAK MONKEY SPEAK! Whoever lies is a MONKEY for a week! At least.
